Courses and Workshops

Adults Class: Regular calligraphy classes, 2 hours long, taking place every Monday, Thursday and Saturday in-person and online. Each student works at their own pace to learn up to 5 different writing styles, and from time to time, is given the opportunity to work on their own projects. Students in this course have the option to register with the Bunka Shodo Gakkai in Tokyo, Japan and take part in a grading system. Once students pass 3rd Dan, they are qualified as a calligraphy teacher.

Junior Class: Regular calligraphy classes for students aged 12 to 15 years old, 1.5 hours long, taking place every Thursday in-person and online. Each student begins with the basic techniques and works at their own pace. Once students are age 16 and over, they are able to register with the Bunka Shodo Gakkai in Tokyo for grading.

Kids Class: Regular calligraphy and painting classes for students aged 6 to 12 years old, 50 minutes long, taking place every Monday in-person and online.

As well as regular classes, we offer 2- 4 hour Calligraphy workshops.

Regular pen calligraphy classes, taking place every Monday, Thursday and Saturday, both in-person and online. Students learn 4 different writing styles in pen calligraphy. Students in this course have the option to register with the Bunka Shodo Gakkai in Tokyo, Japan and take part in a grading system. Once students pass 3rd Dan, they are qualified as a pen calligraphy teacher.

An advanced course in writing certificate forms for students who have completed their training in the 5 different writing styles. Students learn the specific techniques and different layouts for different certificate forms.

In-person and online Sumi Painting workshops for students of any ability. The workshop typically lasts around 3-4 hours, and equipment is provided if required for the in-person lessons. Students wishing to further their training can also enrol in a three-year Sumi Painting training course which takes place twice a month in-person and online.

In-person seal making workshops in Surrey for students of any ability. The date of the workshop can be requested. This course involves designing and carving your own seal. The lessons typically last 4-5 hours, and each class has a maximum of 8 students. Students can either bring their own stone to carve, or purchase one from Koshu for £4 – £10 depending on the stone. For students wanting to frame their Calligraphy or Sumi Painting works, Koshu runs in-person and online Urauchi workshops, an important step to creating your final piece. You will be introduced to the Urauchi technique, which involves flattening and strengthening the artwork with another sheet of backing paper before framing or mounting.

For online workshops, Koshu will post backing paper prior the workshop date for an additional cost of £4 (+ postage) for 5 sheets of backing paper.
